On the above date New Scandia Township held the Annual Meeting. Chairman, Dennis Seefeldt,
Vice Chairman, Paul Rasmussen, Nancy Madden, John Martineau were also present. Absent
Michael Hinz.
The Clerk called the meeting to order and asked for nomination of a'Moderator for the meeting.
Bruce Swenson was elected.
The Clerk read the Notice of the Annual Meeting and Election regarding the following:
(1) One Supervisor for a term of 3 years for Seat Five.
The minutes of the 2001 Annual Meeting were read. The Clerk reported the expenditures for the
fiscal year was $2,275, 798.90 and the Treasurer reported the revenue for the fiscal year was
$2,352,209.82. Mike 'White made a motion to approve the minutes of the Annual Meeting of
March 13, 2001 and the Clerk and Treasurer's report for the year of 2001. Peter Schwarz
seconded the motion and motion adopted.
Planning Commission Report/Peter Schwarz
Peter Schwarz Chairman of the Planning Commission reported on behalf of the Planning
Commission. Mr. Schwarz reported the township processed nine variances and eight approved
and one tabled. One Minor Subdivision, one Rezone and three Conditional Use Permits.
New Scandia Fire and Rescue/Steve Spence
Steve Spence, Fire Chief gave the following report: In the year of 2001 the Fire and Rescue
Department responded to 177 emergency calls. 118 of these calls were for medical or rescue and
59 were fire or emergency service related. Run volume showed a decrease from a high of 198
calls in 2000.
The department added one member to its roster: Jerome Merrier. They had one member retire:
Bruce Swenson with 20 years of service. They currently have 20 members and will be
conducting a recruitment drive this spring.
In order to effectively respond to the increasing requirements and demands placed upon a fire and
rescue service we have established eight specialty teams. In addition to their normal duties and
training requirements each member of the deparhnent must join and train on at least one of these
items. The teams consist of:
(1) Ice and Water Rescue, which includes diving
(2) Aorto Extrication
(3) Pump Operators
(4) Scene Safety Officers
(5) Rapid Intervention
(6) hazardous Materials
(7) Ladder and Ventilation
(8) Confined Space/Low Angle Rescue
These teams are being equipped through donations, grants and proceeds from the Firefighters
Ball.

2002 is the 50 -year anniversary for the department. In August 1952, 17 volunteers held the first
meeting of the New Scandia Fire Department and the department plans to hold a community
celebration honoring all those who served over the last 50 years.
Park and Recreation/Paul Rasmussen
Paul Rasmussen gave the following report: Scandia/Marine Lionsare proposing to construct a
picnic shelter approximately 24x 30 feet at the land the township acquired from Washington
County by the Hay Lake School Museum. The township may have to assist in some of the
funding. The following persons have been appointed to the Park and Recreation Committee:
Dana Wojtowicz, Jenny Fredrickson and Deborah Campobasso.
Forest bake Youth Service Bureau/Brian Al
Brian Alm a member of the Youth Service Bureau's Board of Directors. Mr. Alm thanked New
Scandia Township for past support on behalf of the Forest Lake Youth Service Bureau. The goal
of the Youth Service Bureau has been to assist in problems affecting youth and their families that
could result in youth entering the juvenile justice system.
Mr. Alm expressctm thanks to Scandia for making available the Community Center for the
Annual Meeting. Mr. Alm introduced two members of the Youth Service Bureau's Youth
Advisory Board and they informed the residents about their involvement with the Youth Service
Bureau.
New Business
Kevin Nickelson questioned Mr. Bruce Swenson if Swenson Recycling would continue. Mr.
Swenson stated he would continue if he has the support of the residents.
Michael White questioned if the township would consider a dome or structure over the Skating
Facility. Mr. Rasmussen stated the north end of the Skating Facility could be painted white and
that may help the ice to last longer into to the skating season. Park and Recreation will review
this issue.
Board of Canvass for Year of 2001
The Clerk read the Board of Canvass report for the year of 2001. Peter Schwarz made a motion to
approve the Board of Canvass Report for the year of 2001. Michael White seconded the motion
and motion adopted.
Michael White made a motion to reconvene the Annual Meeting to August 20, 2002.

were issued. Of those permits 30 were new homes for the average of $198,036.00 per home.
