BACKGROUND: SAAMI REINDEER HERDERS OF SCANDINAVIA The 2015 Scandia Vinterfest Theme is "Saami Reindeer Herders of Scandinavia" (pronounced SAHmi). The Saami (also spelled Sami) are the indigenous people of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia near and above the Arctic Circle. The area where they live is called Sapmi or Samiland. Today there are 70,000-100,000 Saami, with the largest concentration in Norway. The Saami have traditionally been semi -nomadic, meaning that their lifestyle involves physically moving from place to place while retaining connection to a locale/region. Their culture has evolved around reindeer herding, hunting and fishing. Today the Saami work in many professions, some splitting their time between living in urban areas and returning seasonally to remote areas to herd reindeer and live a more traditional life. SAAMI DEMOCRACY Saami people have their own parliament, and flag ... even though they live in different countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia). The Saami send delegates to participate in the Global Indigenous People's Movement of the United Nations and they elect representatives to the Saami Council that promotes participation from each of the European countries where the Saami live. There are representative Saami parliaments in each country except Russia. Is your design abstract or representational? A combination? Love of nature and a deep belief that all of nature is sacred is applied to beautiful, practical everyday items—with pattern, design and color. Images of animals, plants and natural phenomenon are depicted both with drawing as well as abstract patterns. Saami weaving and patterns—incorporated into beautiful and brightly colored clothing— are complex and specific to each region. REINDEER ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE SAAM1. Reindeer are incorporated into Saami tools, clothing, food, and art. There will be a display of Saami crafts and other artifacts in the Scandia Elementary foyer glass display case. The colors of the Saami flag are deep blue, red, gold, and green. These are the colors that you will see in Saami traditional clothing as well. Deep blue stands for the "dark time" of winter when the sun doesn't rise (winter in the Arctic). Red stands for the "midnight sun" of summer, when the sun doesn't set. Gold represents the Sun, and Green the Earth and all life. The circle represents the unity of all Saami people in the world crossing national boundaries. Learning about the Saami people is part of this project. We hope that you find the art and design, culture and lifestyle of the Saami to be interesting and inspirational.
