2018 ANNUAL REPORT
January 15th, 2019
In 2018 Scandia Fire & Rescue responded to 225 emergency calls. This is the highest call volume since 2010
which was a record year (our average is 200 calls for help). 169 of these calls were for medical or rescue
assistance and 56 were fire or emergency service related. A summary break down by situation type, month, day
of week and time of day is attached for your review.
We signed an Auto Aid agreement with Forest Lake Fire. This agreement helps speed up the process when
responding to a structure fire by having both departments paged at the same time vs waiting for a Scandia fire
officer to request mutual aid. All structure fires that involve more than 50% of the house will require more
manpower and water than any one department can supply.
The return of Water Ball to the Taco Daze event. This event was not done for the last couple of ye ars due to the
effort required to make it happen. We had a lot of feedback that people were happy to see it return.
We renewed our fire contract to cover part of May Township. Neil put a lot of work into this.
Signed up with Washington County to be part of their BoldPlanning online program. This program is assisting us
in developing our own Emergency Operations Plan & Continuity of Operations Plan
We made the transition from a stipend/volunteer Fire Chief to a part time (24 hours per week) Fire Chief.
o This has made a large difference in the activities the chief is able to get completed every week. We have
been writing grants, organizing paper work and getting some of the projects completed that have been
stalled due to time restraints and many other items.
Projects completed in 2018 include:
o Replacement of our SCBA Compressor and cascade bottles.
New unit is much quieter and can achieve 6,000psi vs 5,000psi. This allows us to fill more bottles
during training and active fires.
o Replacement of 12 truck mounted SCBA packs.
These packs are our main life support during any hazardous incident (Fire, CO or any other
dangerous chemical release).
With a donation of $9,450 from the Scandia Relief Association we were able to add a thermal
imaging camera to each SCBA pack for firefighter safety.
We also donated the old SCBA to Marine fire to use for spare parts until they can replace their
SCBA.
o Purchased replacement Brush truck
o Added a utility truck to our fleet by not selling our old brush truck chassis.
This truck has been very useful already for setting up training, additional traffic control and
returning contaminated gear back to the fire station for cleaning.
o Purchased 4 sets of auto cribbing for automobile incidents
This purchase was made possible with a donation from the Relief Association of $4,810.
Personnel
o John Bauer resigned after 2years & 7 months due to moving out of the area.
o Joe Grabrick resigned after 2 years & 1 month due to moving out of the area.
o Ron Hawkinson retired after 30 years & 1 month of service.
o Have started the recruiting process. We hope to take 5 new members on June 1st 2019.
o As of December 31st the department has 21 members.
o Of those members 6 are starting their firefighter 1 & 2 training January of 2019.
o We currently have 18 EMT & 15 Firefighter certified members with our goal of 30 trained as EMT &
firefighter.
o We have 4 new EMT’s this year. Jesse Bizzotto, Shaun Holtgreve, Jeremy Johnson & Adriane Krager.
o We completed over 48 hours of fire training & over 24 hours of medical training this year to allow us to
keep our ISO rating and renew our EMT certification. We train 3 nights each month plus 1 Saturday.
We are excited to move into 2019 and plan to serve our community to our fullest potential.
Sincerely
Scandia Fire Department
