7.a i Summer Recreation Programs Staff Report Date of Meeting: March 19, 2019 To: City Council From: Judi Negus, Office Assistant Re: Summer 2019 Recreation Programs Background: Since 2007, the City had partnered with the Girl Scouts of the Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys to offer summer recreation programs at Camp Lakamaga on Big Marine Lake. At the October 1, 2018 PRC meeting, Staff reported the decline in registrations for our summer recreation programs. Staff reached out to Pam Wurster of Camp Lakamaga to discuss summer 2019 recreation programs. Due to low enrollment last year, and the fact that we didn’t meet the minimum registration requirements, Camp Lakamaga will not be offering day camps this summer. Last year, we also offered two week-long tennis sessions. One session had four registrations and the other session was canceled due to only receiving two registrations. The new “Art in Action” program offered last year was quite a success with 16 participants. Issue: What summer recreation programs should be offered? Proposal Details: Staff met with Brooke Smith, the Arts Education Director at St. Croix Festival Theatre. The theatre would like to offer the Art in Action summer arts camp again this summer. The camp would run the week of August 12 through August 16 at the Community Center. The week-long camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon. All registrations would go directly through Festival Theatre. Program details would be included in the City spring newsletter that will be sent to Scandia residents the end of March. In addition, all programs would be promoted on the City’s website and Facebook page. Options: 1. Approve offering the Art in Action summer arts camp. 2. Do not approve offering the Art in Action summer arts camp. Fiscal Impact: None. Registration fee of $60 per participant goes directly to Festival Theatre. Recommendation: At the March 4, 2019 meeting, the Parks and Recreation Committee recommended we offer the Art in Action program and pursue other pro grams based on the results of the recent recreation programming survey.
