Re: Program Agreement with Girl Scouts of MN and WI River Valleys for
Summer Recreation Programs
Background:
Since 2007, the City has partnered with the Girl Scouts of the Minnesota and Wisconsin River
Valleys to offer summer recreation programs at Camp Lakamaga on Big Marine Lake. In
October 2014, staff met with Pam Wurster and Liz Mayer of Camp Lakamaga to discuss summer
2015 recreation programs offered through Camp Lakamaga. In past years, we offered the "Little
Tyke Archers" program and the "Robin Hood & Maid Marion Archers" program. Due to low
enrollment, Camp Lakamaga no longer chooses to offer these classes. As well, Camp Lakamaga
offers archery in the very popular day and half -day camps.
Issue:
Is the attached agreement with the Girl Scouts for summer recreation programs acceptable?
Proposal Details:
Camp Lakamaga will continue to offer three sessions of the full -day weeklong "Outdoor
Explorers Day Camp" at an increased rate of $160; the rate last year was $140. Camp Lakamaga
will continue to offer three sessions of the half -day weeklong "Junior Explorers Day Camp" at
an increased rate of $80; the rate last year was $65.
New this year, Camp Lakamaga is offering a "Sports, Sports, Sports" program. Two sessions of
the half -day weeklong camp will offer volleyball and soccer team sports, as well as individual
sports like gaga (a variation of dodgeball), archery, swimming and badminton. The cost for the
camp will be $80 and run 8:30 a.m. to noon. There will be two sessions offered: July 20-24 and
August 3-7. This camp will be for 2nd to 4d' graders.
Staff is also recommending the City continue to offer Tennis Camp with the same instructor as
last year, Erika Fischer.
A copy of the agreement is included in your packet. This is the same agreement format that was
used last year with updated dates. It has been signed by the Girl Scouts Chief Operating Officer.
Fiscal Impact:
Program revenues will be shared between the City (20%) and River Valleys (80%) for all
programs covered by the agreement. There will be no obligation to either party if programs need
to be cancelled due to lack of registrations.
Last year, the program generated $8,193, $1,638.60 of which the City retained.
Options:
1) Approve the Program Agreement with the Girl Scouts.
2) Amend and then approve the Program Agreement with the Girl Scouts.
3) Take no action at this time.
Recommendation:
Option 1.
