9.) Staff Report-Advertising and Interviewing for FT Maint Worker
Staff Report
Date of Meeting: April 1, 2015
To: City Council
From: Kristina Handt, City Administrator
Re: Advertising and Interviewing for FT Maintenance Worker Position
Background:
In 2014 the City added a third full time maintenance worker to the public works department.
Brian Jahnke recently announced his resignation effective April 8, 2015.
Issue:
Should the Council authorize advertising for an additional FT Maintenance Worker? What
should the hiring process be for the new FT Maintenance Worker position?
Proposal Details:
Staff is requesting the Council authorize the advertising for applications for FT Maintenance
Worker. The job description would remain the same. This is a non-exempt position responsible
for maintaining roads, parks, buildings, utilities and other City facilities.
Consistent with the Employee Recruitment and Selection section of the personnel policy, staff is
proposing an open recruitment process. The position would be advertised on the LMC website
and City website free of charge. Postings would also be advertised in the local newspaper. The
job description included the minimum qualifications necessary for the position. The City
Administrator and Public Works Director would work cooperatively to review applications,
interview applicants and make a final recommendation to the City Council subject to the
appropriate background checks and drug tests.
Staff is proposing applications be accepted through April 24, 2015. Interviews with the City
Administrator and Public Works Director to occur during the week of April 27 or May 4, 2015.
Final hiring approval by City Council would be at the May 19, 2015 regular Council meeting.
Depending on notice requirements of the employee, the new employee would begin late
May/early June.
Fiscal Impact:
The wages, benefits and taxes for the position are budgeted at $58,000. The position would be
advertised at $19.82/hour consistent with the City’s current step plan.
Options:
1) Authorize staff to advertise for applications for FT Maintenance Worker as proposed in
the attached announcement and complete the interview process.
2) Amend the proposed process and then Authorize staff to advertise for applications for FT
Maintenance Worker.
3) Do not authorize the advertisement for FT Maintenance Worker.
Recommendation:
Option 1.
