9.g Tourism Committee
Staff Report
Date of Meeting: June 18, 2019
To: Scandia City Council
From: Brenda Eklund, Deputy Clerk
Re: Formation of a Tourism Committee
Background: At its June 10th meeting, the EDA discussed the results of the tourism assessment
report, conducted by the University of MN Tourism Center. The report noted that the most
pressing need for tourism in Scandia is to identify who will lead tourism efforts for the
community. In the short term, tourism efforts can be coordinated by a task force or committee
to create a tourism development plan, and establish community and stakeholder engagement
to build support and a vision that aligns with community goals.
The following motion was made at the meeting:
Motion by Porubcansky, seconded Ray, to recommend to the City Council the establishment of
a Tourism Committee comprised of 5-7 members representing the business community,
existing tourism venues, and community volunteer organizations that would build support and
a vision for tourism development and establish priorities for meeting the strategies of the
tourism assessment. The Committee would regularly report to the City Council. Vote: 4-0.
Motion carried.
Issue: Should the City Council approve of the formation of a Tourism Committee as
recommended by the EDA?
Options:
1) Approve the EDA’s recommendation to form a Tourism Committee.
2) Make changes to the EDA’s recommendation.
3) Do not approve of a Tourism Committee.
