SCANDIA GOOD NEIGHBOR AWARD PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, respecting, caring for and helping others is a hallmark of the American character,
and central to how we as a community live; and
WHEREAS, respect and care for and from neighbors creates a more sustainable, resilient
community and makes Scandia a great place to live and be; and
WHEREAS, having Good Neighbors increases the well-being of individuals and of the
community in which they live; and
WHEREAS, Scandia throughout its history has been the beneficiary of being a community of
Good Neighbors; and
WHEREAS, Tom Helke contributes to the preservation of Scandia’s heritage with his
eagerness to share the “old ways” with all; and
WHEREAS, Tom Helke has been consistently open, agreeable, and ready to volunteer for the
betterment of the community: helping with Vinterfest by cutting an ice circle on Big Marine
Lake, using his boom truck to rescue birds and pets from trees, replacing light bulbs on the
tall Gammelgarden building, repairing their flag pole, clearing a section of Highway 97
ditch, offering to decorate with holiday lights the tall tree outside of the Community Center,
annually planting oats to be cut, threshed and bound for public demonstration, and this year,
generously working to help the City help neighbors clean up from the July tornado; and
WHEREAS, Tom Helke with his kind and positive demeanor has demonstrated the many
qualities of being a Good Neighbor and has been nominated to receive this Award,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Scandia presents the Scandia Good
Neighbor Award to Tom Helke, in recognition and appreciation.
