8.c Staff Report Justin Levy Staff Report Date of Meeting: September, 17 2019 To: City Council From: Mike Hinz, Fire Chief Re: New hire Background: As most know we are down to 20 members on the fire department, last month I requested approval to start the hiring process of Justin Levy. We have had our interviews with him and need council approval to make him an active probationary fire fighter effective October 1st Issue: Should the city make an employment offer to Justin Levy? Proposal Details: We would like the city to offer Justin Levy a conditional job, based on passing his medical exam and back ground check. Fiscal Impact: The fiscal impact to hire Justin would be approximately $2,000 over the next 2 years for training and about $750 in wages per year. This is a lower cost than usual as he already has his Firefighter training. Options: (1) Direct staff to continue the hiring process with an October 1st start date. (2) Wait for next regular hiring process (3) Do nothing Recommendation: Option (1).
