Re: City Administrator Resignation, Direction on Hiring Process
Background:
My letter of resignation was submitted to the City Council on June 11th. Proposed final day is
November 6, 2015 to allow for the recruitment and placement of a successor.
Issue:
How would the Council like to proceed with filling the City Administrator position?
Proposal Details:
A copy of the resignation letter is included in your packet. The Council should first accept the
resignation.
As has been done in the past, the Council could hire a recruitment firm to handle the advertising,
screening, and other aspects of the hiring process. The previous two administrators were hired
using the services of Springsted Inc. (recently purchased Waters and Co.). There are other firms
(Brimeyer Fursman, David Drown and Associates, etc) that also do executive recruitment and
have experience specifically recruiting city administrators.
Options:
1) Direct staff to obtain quotes from executive search firms for recruitment assistance.
2) Handle the hiring process in house (there are not the staff resources to do this so it would
require the Council meeting frequently to do the work of a recruiter and possibly involve
the City Attorney).
3) Do not fill the position at this time.
Recommendation:
Accept Handt resignation.
1) Authorize Staff to Obtain Proposals from Recruitment Services and Bring Agreement to
July Council meeting
