4. Staff Report-banners for Cycling Scandia
Staff Report
Date of Meeting: December 4, 2019
To: City Council
From: Brenda Eklund, Deputy Clerk
Re: Request from Cycling Scandia for banner installation
Background:
Janie O’Connor, Cycling Scandia, is requesting the City Council reconsider the action to delay
installation of signage which would direct cyclists to the Warming House for biking amenities as
discussed at the November 6th Work Session:
Three banners as pictured below have been purchased with funds from the SHIP grant. The
banners measure 24” by 18” and would be installed on lightpoles at Oakhill outside of Meisters,
the street light pole on Olinda off the SW corner of the hockey rink, and the street light pole on
the east side of Oakhill Road midway coming up the hill from the south.
Recommendation:
Staff is recommending the banners be installed for at least one bicycling season . The banners
have been purchased with committed funds from the SHIP grant and the City should
demonstrate utilization of these funds.
DISCUSSION ON ATTACHING BANNERS TO CITY LIGHT POLES
Mayor Maefsky recommended to wait for the Tourism Committee to give direction on banners
and signage within the city so that there is consistency in design. Council was in consensus to
hold off on authorizing the PW Director to install three banners which would direct cyclists to
the Warming House.
