Addition 5-6-20 Proclamation - Wear MasksSCANDIA CITY COUNCIL
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, our community is being negatively affected socially, emotionally and
economically by the COVID 19 virus, and
WHEREAS, COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus about which there is much we do
not know, and
WHEREAS, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends wearing a mask
in public settings to slow the spread of the virus by helping people who have the
virus but do not know it because they do not have any symptoms, to not
transmit it to others, and
WHEREAS, while the wearing of masks in public does not protect the wearer from
getting the virus, it does significantly lower the chance of the wearer infecting
others, and
WHEREAS, if we lower the likelihood of one person’s infecting another, which
the wearing of masks does, the impact is exponential, so even a small reduction
in those odds results in a huge decrease in deaths, and
WHEREAS, because we don’t know for sure who’s sick, for masks to be effective
the only solution is for everyone to wear a mask, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Scandia supports Minnesota Governor Tim
Walz’s directives which include encouraging Minnesotans to wear manufactured
or homemade masks outside their homes when social distancing is difficult. This
would include face-to-face interactions at all Scandia retail establishments.
Agreed to this 6th day of May, 2020
Christine Maefsky, Mayor, City of Scandia
