Improved gravel road - Prime Coat and Chip Seal SCANDIA W CHIP SEAL - PROCESS 1. Perform infrastructure replacement, if necessary. (Culverts) 2. Repair any soft spots or frost boils. 3. Grade the existing gravel to the provide a uniform section and surface. Provide a 4% crown and positive drainage to the ditches. 4. Add gravel where necessary to provide a solid base. 5. Compact the road to 100% density. 6. Apply primer coat of emulsion and allow to cure. 7. Apply emulsion and chip seal aggregate. 8. If desired, a second layer of emulsion and aggregate can be applied. SCANDIA CHIP SEAL - CUNSIDERATIQNS • Reduces dust/ mud as it is a water -proof membrane surface. • Intended for lower volume roads <300 ADT Provides a smooth driving surface. (w/adequate base and proper preparation work) Erosion of the surface and loss of aggregates is eliminated. Can be damaged as it is a thin flexible mat of oil and rock, but can be repaired. Repairs are significantly less in cost than a bituminous or concrete surface and can easily be performed. • Requires a new chip seal every 5-7 yrs. • Surface can be plowed and salted during winter similar to a bituminous surface. SCANDIA CHIP SEAL - CUNSIDERATIQNS Chip sealing does not provide strength to the road like a bituminous application. Road is only as strong as the gravel base. Road proposed for chip seal should be monitored for soft spots and frost heaves during the freeze thaw cycle. Construction should occur after frost is out of the ground and before Sept. 1 SCANDIA CASE STUDY - SILITER CREEK TOWNSHIP IN 2013 4 miles of gravel roads were improved. Initially designed to chip seal with a fog seal Changed to double chip seal during construction. Performed two other test sections 700' of Chip Seal with Fog Seal (original design) 700' of Chip Seal, Sand Seal with Fog Seal First month had some incidents that tore through the mat. Self Propelled Agricultural Sprayer tore through shoulder Dual wheeled truck tore through while turning around in the middle of the road Broom brush burned through mat. Tractor break skid at an intersection tore mat. SCANDIA REPAIRS The repair process is simple, We bought a couple pails offoundation coating from Menards. Glean and pack outthe damaged area. Pour in some foundation coating oil. Add the FA-3A chips and pack level. {5ee picsj Photos/Information from: Chip Seal over Gravel Road Project Report in Silver Creek Township dated July 2013 r Photos from: Chip Seal over Gravel Road Project Report in Silver Creek Township dated July 2013 SCANDIA CASE STUDY -RESULTS ■ Smooth Ride • Eliminated muddy conditions • Eliminated dusty conditions • Bituminous like surface performance ■ Residents are happy SCANDIA DOUBLE CHIP SEAL PROJECTS PERFORMED BY FARHNER ASPHALT City/Town A .--a is Location Town of Clam Falls 3401h Ave, Fredric WI (W. from 1151h St.) 280th Street Town of Farmington (South from 30th Ave) Town of Hayward Indian Lake Rd Town of Round Lake Various Streets City of Shell Lake South Shore Drive 1 Mile 2013 3.5 Miles 2014 2 Miles 2012 Unknown 2012 0.75 Mile 2011 SCANDIA 1*--Z/'i,< ® 185T" STREET -TEST HOLES SCANDIA 185TH STREET N-TEST HOLES J li14940 I L I 14939 IC-- \I I 12" CLASS 5 ' - I - I I I I III 1 I 18989 18901 I I I I ---------------------I ------------- Ir V i I I ', !I I I I I I @4 I III Q 18889 6530 LF I ----------- - - - - - - - - z III T-_________ _z------------------- ------ __-___T-__r__-_-_-----+----__------________-.-_--_----___----------+_...__..___.....-..____.._._____+__ a 18880 LD I / 10" CLASS 5 + 5" ROCKY CLAYS 14740 I f d fi III-------18655 ---- -- laoao j 4--- lsoao CITY LIMIT H r 18625 Ji---- i I'S I, „ I, Q i I O 16 "+ CLASS 5 14018 12" CLASS i 7i it 16" CLASS -1fi"+CLASS $--=--'-r- -- - — — --- - --.-- - —,r----------------- ---_ _ _—--I--- rj 185TH ST N I, 13961 N 15 " CLASS 5 I Ili 14025 19 li li Q 14" CLASS 5 I i; it ',I li 14661 w 15072 i li r Q I 19 I O II i I U ILPI -------- --- -L— -- — I I 18081 15261 # I I I lil 15097 --------- s,IE I I I 1 Irpez 'I I X,F V r V 'ten B C7 LTC3 N P M E N K I N C CITY OF SCMARINE RAIL EST HG 1I dVdV G ns Ilf g E gf r s & Surveyors 185TH ST&E)l➢MARINE TRAIL-TEiT HOLES snuG mx rvxuwmn x FIGURE NG.1 185TH STREET -.
