Skating Program Update
• Katy Herman has not secured another instructor to teach the Learn to Skate program, and
confirmed that she will teach this class if we are able to move forward.
• Herman reported that the Roseville Skating Rink closed on November 21, 2020. Herman stated
that Minnesota Governor Waltz’s Executive Order closed down organized youth team sports
until December 18, 2020 but did not close down adult team sports or any age engaging in
independent, recreational ice-skating activities. She explained that the expense associated with
the operations at Roseville’s rink is supported primarily through organized youth team sports.
And that is the unofficial reason Roseville closed.
• Herman strongly recommends continuing with plans to open Scandia’s ice rink when possible
and to offer the Learn to Skate classes unless a new Executive Order is published prohibiting
these activities. Herman will provide staff additional requirements to include in information for
families signing up for Learn to Skate classes. This will include, but is not limited to: Parents
must provide all transportation, a parent must remain on site so children can warm up in a car
as needed, children must wear face coverings at all times where scarves would meet the
requirement and all families must stay flexible to understand that cancellations with full
refunds are possible at the last minute. Herman is in contact with parents of past participants
and is confident that Learn to Skate classes would be successful in this season even with these
stipulations.
