Public Works Activity Report, January 2016
At the beginning of the month, we picked up a Wood Chipper and an Aerial lift for tree trimming.
. We also needed to make room in our shop, so we needed to do a little rearranging to
accommodate the extra equipment.
Monthly inspections were needed to be done. This involves all of the municipal buildings. All
safety issues such as fire extinguishers, garage doors, emergency lighting etc....
We also perform inspection on all of the hoists, cables, straps and ladders to name a few things.
We also did the months meter reading for lift station pumps.
The crew had various small jobs to perform through the month. Some of the various jobs were
replacing parts on equipment. Plow blades, John Deere snow blower side door/window, wind
shield whipper blades, new jack for snow plow on tandem and power sprayer hose needed to be
replaced. Jeff was able to do some welding on the plow blade to replace the old jack stand with a
new one.
We needed to work on the Hockey rink lights. One of the lights was burned out. Another was not
adjusted properly. The aerial lift we rented worked out very nicely for that project.
The lights did trip off one evening. The next day we did have an electrician inspect it, but nothing
was found. We have had no problem since.
We had a water line break due to extreme cold weather at the community center which resulted in
reduced pressure in the line. Had some trouble finding the break, but once we did, we were able to
repair the problem. Due to the break, some of the lines got sediment in the filters; we needed to
flush those filters and lines out. The system is operating just fine now.
The crew went around and took the Christmas wreaths down from the light pole and stowed them
away for the season. Along with those, Christmas trees and other ornaments came down as well.
On January 8, we had approximately a 3 inch snow fall. I had the full crew go out and do a
complete snow removal. With the weekend approaching, I felt it necessary to have a good
clean-up.
I did keep one truck loaded with salt in case of an emergency. It is routine, but after a snow event
such as this one, I have the crew dump the load they may still have and clean their equipment.
We did receive our first order of salt for the season. 75 tons was delivered which is needed to store
into the salt shed.
With the snow fall, we needed to clean sidewalks and skating rink of snow before we use the
Zamboni on the rink to resurface. Maintenance on the rink has been continuous and good.
We also went back to the gravel roads and spread more gravel due to the extreme cold and slippery
conditions.
SCADA system was contacting us for a continuous problem, which was a dosing valve. One of the
crew and myself needed to pump the well down to gain excess to locate the problem. We have
been working closely with Automatic Systems to fix this. The problem is an Actuator switch that
activates a value to open and shut. We are still in the process to replace the part.
We have spent a couple of day's tree trimming in the non-residential areas for trees interfering
with plowing procedures.
The last few days of January, the crew has spent preparing the community center, warming house
and surrounding area for Vinterfest. First time as Director, I did want things to look good and go
well for the event.
Thank you
