7.b Co-Sponsor STRIDES Walk OpportunityAnn: For the August 21st event, the STRIDES Walk, this would be done throughout
Scandia and be focused on Diabetes awareness. The STRIDES Walk is a Lions event
(Strides: Lions for Diabetes Awareness | Lions Clubs International). However, Cities and
Parks generally are involved because roads need to be blocked off and there's typically
a healthy lunch served after the walk. Anyone - local or visitor - can participate. The fee
typically runs around $25-$30 to cover the cost of a t-shirt and any costs. Meals are
often donated or sponsored by local businesses. It is not a timed race - it is more of a
casual awareness/fun type event. Proceeds support local Diabetes efforts. Again, this
could support the new playground or adult exercise equipment at the Community Center
because exercise can help prevent Type 2 Diabetes.
Terry: As for the walk on Aug 21, I think that would be a good thing for PRC to
sponsor / co-sponsor as appropriate.
Ann: That would be great if the PRC would co-sponsor the STRIDES Walk! There's a
planning guide that the Lions Clubs International has for doing a STRIDES Walk. We
would probably want to start working on that in June so that we allow enough time for
planning and promoting the event.
Terry: we can get the strides walk on the agenda for June 7. I looked at the website
and this can be big or small…. how much planning additional coordination would you
need for the PRC as a co-sponsor? Is there a cost to the city for the event?
