6.c) Staff Report-Park Volunteer Activities
STAFF REPORT
Date of Meeting: July 6, 2015
To: Parks and Recreation Committee
From: Judi Negus, Office Assistant
Re: Park Volunteer Activities
Background:
In the past, the Parks and Recreation Committee would identify volunteer n eeds at Scandia
parks and organize volunteer days to complete those tasks. Janie O’Connor has been soliciting
and coordinating volunteers for the butterfly garden at Lilleskogen park.
Issue:
What are the volunteer needs at our parks?
Proposal Details:
The Committee should determine what volunteer tasks are needed at our parks. Once the
needs are determined, the Committee should decide how to execute the volunteer tasks. All
volunteers need to complete a volunteer In-Kind Donation Form. Lakes Free members are
volunteering their time to complete identified tasks two Thursdays in July.
Staff suggestions include painting the fence and planting approximately nine lilac bushes at the
Swedish monument, as well as raking and pulling weeds at playgrounds. Co mmittee members
could solicit volunteers to pull buckthorn at Lilleskogen park and remove the logs at the
butterfly garden to reduce cost of completing the parking lot.
Fiscal Impact:
None.
Recommendation:
1) Determine what our volunteer needs are at Scandia parks.
2) If necessary, prioritize our volunteer needs.
