6.a) SoaringEagles Pollinator Planting ProjectPollinator Planting Project
Project Overview and Request for Bid
Soaring Eagles 4H
& Friends of Scandia Parks and Trails
Proposed location: Oren Rd N and Olgilvie Ave N
Size: 1.7 ac
Existing Condition: Old field, dominated by smooth brome, Canada goldenrod.
Native species (besides goldenrod), were uncommon but included common
milkweed, blue vervain, and sweet everlasting.
The terrain was level, but irregular with humps and dips from gophers and past
farm uses. The soils appeared to be a sandy loam.
In the southwest corner was an area cleared for a hockey rink, and a small shed.
Leftover gravel from the construction of this or other projects formed a berm to the
north of the rink. The restoration area would exclude the SWcorner.
The project area is shown in the attached map – the trail is not existing but
proposed.
Project goals:
Restore site to native prairie species, with a high diversity of forb that are
high value for pollinators (e.g. at least 30 forbs), with several species in
bloom in all months from May to October.
Have a small “demonstration garden” area, that will be installed by 4H and
other volunteers with plugs. Anticipated amount would be 400 plugs, in a
500 sq ft area. Volunteers will also apply newsprint for weed barrier, and
woodchip mulch.
Engage 4H and other volunteers in the seeding process.
Proposed restoration process:
Mow in September 2015.
Spray regrowth with glyphosate herbicide (October).
Rx burn in spring 2016
Spray regrowth
Seeding by early June 2016: Drill grass seed, broadcast forbs
Establishment process: Mow site 2-3 times in 2016, once in 2017, and Rx
burn in spring 2018. Spot spray weeds in 2016 and 2017. (glyphosate will
NOT be used).
Request from Prairie Restorations:
Provide cost estimate for entire restoration process, including seed, plugs and 3 yrs
maintenance.
