6.b) Staff Report-Winter Programming STAFF REPORT Date of Meeting: October 5, 2015 To: Parks and Recreation Committee From: Judi Negus, Office Assistant Re: Winter Programming Background: Last year we offered three skating programs: Pleasure Skating (K-6th grade) There were 13 students registered for this program at a rate of $25 for the six -week class. As in past years, Matt Rasmussen volunteered to supervise the class. This coming winter, Rasmussen once again has agreed to run the Pleasure Skating program. Learn to Skate (for beginner and advanced skaters) There were 26 students registered for this program at a rate of $59 for the six-week class. Katy Herman was a contracted instructor for the Learn to Skate program. Vinterfest Ice Performance There were two students registered for this program; however, it was cancelled due to low enrollment. Herman was a contracted instructor for the Vinterfest Ice Performance program. Issue: Should the Parks and Recreation Committee offer the Pleasure Skating program and Learn to Skate program again this coming winter? Should the Parks and Recreation Committee offer other winter programs? Proposal Details: Staff had an exchange with Rasmussen. Rasmussen has agreed to volunteer his time to run the Pleasure Skating program. Staff is proposing the same registration fee as last year. The Pleasure Skating program would run the same time as last year’s program, from 3:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., one day a week (Thursday) for six weeks beginning Thursday, January 7, 2016, at a cost of $25. Staff met with Katy Herman, the Skating Director of Cutting Edge Skating Association (CESA) in Forest Lake and experienced coach, who taught the Learn to Skate program for the past two years. Herman is interested in teaching the class again this coming winter. Herman is proposing the same registration fee as the last two years. The Learn to Skate program would run the same time as last year’s program, from 3:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., one day a week (Tuesday) for six weeks beginning Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at a cost of $59. Fiscal Impact: Herman would receive 80% of the registration fees as compensation for the Learn to Skate program. Options: 1. Offer both of the proposed programs. 2. Offer some of the proposed programs. 3. Do not offer any proposed programs. Recommendation: Option 1
