3. Hopkins Tree and Shrub PruningNEWLY PLANTED TREES ARE PRUNED AND TRIMMED TD RETAIN THEIR NATURAL FORMS.
ONLY DEAD. BROKEN OR DAMAGED LIMBS SHOULD BE REMOVED AT THE INITIAL PLANTING.
AFTER
THINNING AND SPACING
MOST TREES BENEFIT FROM THINNING -REMOVING A PORTION OF THE LIMBS
THAT COMPETE FOR SPACE AND LIGHT. A GOOD RULE OF THUMB IS TO
EVENLY SPACE LATERALS. 8-12 INCHES APART IN THE YOUNG TREE.
IS A GOOD RULE OF THUMB TO HELP ASSURE AN IDEAL
"LADDER" AT MATURITY.
BRANCH ANGLES AND SIZE
NARROW ANGLES SIGNAL A POINT OF FUTURE
WEAKNESS. TWO BRANCHES GROWING AGAINST
EACH OTHER, SIMPLY REMOVE ONE OF THE
TWO BRANCHES -FOR STRENGTH, THE IDEAL
BRANCHING ANGLE APPROXIMATES 10 OR
2 O'CLOCK. I
LATERAL BRANCHES SHOULD BE NO
MORE THAN 1/2 TO 3/4 THE
"TER OF THE TRUNK.

SHRUB "SHEARED". ALL BRANCHES
CLIPPED AT A UNIFORM HEIGHT
WITHOUT REGARD TO NATURAL HABITS.
INCORRECT PRUNING
CORRECT PRUNING
ALL HEDGES MUST BE SHEARED WIDER
AT THE BOTTOM THAN TOP TO ALLOW
SUNLIGHT TO REACH LOWER BRANCHES.
HEDGE
CORRECT PRUNING
ORNAMENTAL SHRUBS ARE PRUNED TO ENABLE THEM TO PRODUCE MORE
FLOWERS, TAKE SOME DESIRED FORM AND FOR REMOVAL OF UNUSUAL
OR INJURED GROWTH.
HOW AND WHEN TO PRUNE FLOWERING PLANTS WILL DEPEND UPON A
KNOWLEDGE OF THE HABIT AND FLOWERING PERIOD OF INDIVIDUAL PLANTS.

TREAT BARK ABRASIONS ON TREE TRUNKS PROMPTLY TO PERMIT RAPID HEALING OF THE
WOUND AND PREVENT DECAY.
(A) TOOLS AND MATERIALS: A SHARP CURVED -BLADE PRUNING KNIFE. IF THE BARK IS THICK.
A SHARP WOOD CHISEL AND LIGHT MALLET ARE USED TO CUT IT.
(B) PROCEDURE:
(1) DETERMINE EXTENT OF INJURY AND CAREFULLY REMOVE ALL LOOSE BARK.
(2) START THE TRACING IN SOUND BARK ABOVE INJURY AND WORK KNIFE OR CHISEL
DOWN ON A SLIGHT CURVE TO ONE SIDE OF INJURY. REMOVING ALL SPRUNG BARK.
HOLD CHISEL AT A SLI GHT -&.Vl 7L6 AWAY IS_ny1_ I NdWRY WITH CHI SELED EDGE TOWARD
THE SOUND BARK.
(3) CONTINUE TRACING DOWNWARD UNTIL DISTANCES ABOVE AND BELOW CENTER
OF INJURY ARE EOUAL. REPEAT PROCEDURES ON OPPOSITE SIDE OF INJURY.
(4) THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE TRACING MUST BE ESTABLISHED ON THE CENTER
OF THE INJURY TO PERMIT UNIFORM HEALING.
(5) WHEN TWO SMALL INJURIES ARE CLOSE TOGETHER. MAKE ONE BARK TRACING,
BECAUSE THE THIN STRIP OF BARK BETWEEN TWO ABRASIONS DRIES OUT AND THE
TRACING MUST BE REPEATED.
(6) THE SHAPE OF THE BARK TRACING SHOULD BE OVAL SO THERE IS NO POINT.
IT SHOULD LOOK AS IF IT WAS A CONTINUOUS LINE DRAWN AROUND THE WOUND.
