5.a Aug 2021 Chair reportPRC Chair report – for August 4, 2021 Strides Walk Ann Rinkenberger of the Lions asked if the PRC would be willing to co-sponsor the Strides Lions Diabetes walk. The purpose of the walk is to raise awareness of diabetes and diabetes related issues, and to help educate the community about healthy activities to help fight diabetes. The PRC needs to address several questions, not the least of which is to whether to support this effort at the $1800 level as requested by the lions. Additional detailed questions are included below from an email sent to Ann. City administrator Camilleri clarified that will city funds should not be used solely as a donation. Funds could be used for this event, since the goal of the event is to promote public health. At the August second PRC meeting, the committee needs to decide whether to support the effort, ask to support it at a lower level, and participate as well as help recruit volunteers for the event. Here is the email sent to Anne on July 11, 2021 As we discussed the PRC is interested in being a partner in this event. Sounds like we have a little bit of time to button down the route and apply for the permits. We settled on October 9 due to other activity happening in Marine on October 2. Can you verify how much of the cost you would like from the city / PRC for the event. $1800? At the PRC meeting on Thursday, we talked about having a single short that stays South of Hwy 97. For example, starting at the Community Center going towards highway 97 but staying on the South side of 97 and cutting over to Lilleskogen, walk the trail, walk through Gammelgarden, and returning to the Community Center. Could we consider having a longer route as well? My thoughts here…start at the Community Center, head towards the t-ball field, head west past Meisters, north on Olinda Trail past Wayne Erickson to Olinda lane, follow that to Oland, South to Oakhill and proceed across 97 to Lilleskogen. After a walk through th e park on the trail return pass the Gammelgarden and finish at the Community Center. That's approximately 2 miles. Of course the challenge there will get traffic control at highway 97. At the PRC meeting we did discuss that the crossing at Oak Hill could be a challenge, I sure understand that, and it would need additional traffic control West of that crossing. Something to discuss. Can we safely cross 97? Since this is the first time, a single shorter route may be better. Keep it simple? We could expand the event in future years. For discussion. Other ideas: • Have someone at each of the parks to explain something about it. • Someone from cycling scandia at the sign by the warming house to promote biking • Osceola Medical Center with a booth at the end for diabetes awareness. • Timing the long (if we do it) and short walk to end at about the same time. Orwell Ave Park Properties Karen Schick and Mary Hooley from the Friends of Scandia Parks and Trails reached out to me to inquire about possible projects at the two park properties located on Orwell Ave. I summarize several issues with the properties, explaining that we have minimum requirements to meet and, based on community input, most likely acceptable activities will be to maintain or restore the natural character of those parks. They responded to that favorably and would like to propose some future projects for those parks. I also explained that one of the adjacent property owners attended a PRC meeting earlier this year to request we do something about the buckthorn issues at the southern parcel. Mary and Karen suggested that we do a walkthrough of the property sometime in September. That would give them some ideas about upcoming possible project proposals to include addressing the invasives issue. Capital Improvement Planning Committee I will be participating with the Capital Improvement Planning Committee representing the Parks and Recreation committee. That committee will meet on August 4, 2021. 4th Annual Taco Daze World Famous Pickleball tournament The forms have been submitted to participate in the September 11 Taco days event.
