SUBJECT: Summary of recent actions by the City Council relating to the Planning
Commission

BACKGROUND
In early 2020, members expressed a desire to receive a summary on actions taken by the City Council on
items reviewed by the Planning Commission. Planning and Zoning requests (such as variances, code
amendments, etc.) start with review and recommendations made by the Planning Commission, and then
are approved or denied by the City Council.
RECENT ITEMS
Variances
Two variance requests were reviewed by the Council at their August 17th meeting:
Variance request by Lucas Alm to alter a nonconforming structure within required setback areas
from the St Croix River at 21795 St Croix Trail North
o This request was approved by the City Council
o The Planning Commission recommended approval of the request at the August 3rd
Planning Commission meeting
Variance request by Alissa Pier to add onto a deck located within the required setback from Bone
Lake at 23375 Lofton Avenue North
o The Planning Commission recommended approval of the request at the August 3rd
Planning Commission meeting, but with a smaller encroachment than was requested by
the applicant
o This request was approved by the City Council at the August 17th Council meeting
The Council approved for the setback as originally requested by the applicant
