5.k update on veterans memorial projectTO: Scandia City Council and Park & Recreation Committee FR: Dave Wilson, Veterans Memorial Committee Co -Chair RE: Update on the Memorial February 22, 2016 Hello Everyone, Due to vacations and scheduling conflicts, I'd like to provide this email update about the Memorial to you. Tom Triplett is on vacation through March. We've made good progress with fund raising and are in the process of organizing a Benefit and Ride this coming May 21. Following that we feel confident about starting the first phase of construction. Our plan is to build the memorial in installments. Starting the Memorial off with the most important part, the Honor Wall, will fulfill our obligation immediately to those who have purchased bricks and inspire others to purchase. Below is a tentative construction plan that we've drafted for us to work with. May: Site preparation. Completed by our volunteers. June: Construction of the Honor Wall that will hold the personalized bricks. This is planned to be on a decorative concrete base on the "patio" slab. We will work with PRC beforehand for the details here. Our goal is to complete this by July 41n From this point on we can add on the remaining pieces as funds are available. The three columns will need to be ordered. Hopefully by November we can see the columns and flagpole installed. We have received business donations as well as individual donations. American Legion posts have recently received our requests and have indicated financial support. Again, we are pleased with the results so far. The Benefit and Ride will become an annual event. Funds raised will go to the Memorial maintenance as we discussed, and to the Veterans Support Fund in the Lions Foundation. One thing that I've learned through this process is that veteran funding is under -funded. I hope that this will draw attention to the needs of current veterans today. Thank you for your support.
