5.c Staff Report
Staff Report
Date of Meeting: November 1, 2021
To: Parks and Recreation Committee
From: Brenda “Bee” Stignani, Office Assistant
Re: Staff Report
Staff confirmed with Skating Instructors Gerty and Krueger the structure of their three classes
to complete the promotional flyer being prepared. Three 30-minute separate classes offered
sequentially with optional 60-minute supervised practice time. Learn to Skate Beginner 4-4:30
p.m., Learn to Skate Advanced 4:30-5 p.m. and Hockey Skills 5-5:30 p.m.
Krueger has contacted some potential assistants to consider hiring, the number to be
determined by the number of students enrolled. Historically, assistants have been paid $20 per
class as a stipend. This was unintentionally omitted from the recommendation accepted by City
Council on September 21st to approve the 2022 Winter Recreational Program. Krueger requests
this be considered for enrollment over 15 students, with the option to bring on an a dditional
assistant for every 10-15 students at their discretion. They would like the ability to provide
additional assistants if the skill level of the students warrants the need. Each class has a
maximum of 20 students, but two assistants may be necessary to supervise that many beginner
skaters while the instructors are teaching and supervising other classes.
The transportation department for Scandia Elementary School has confirmed bus #41 will
deliver students to the warming house on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning January 5,
2022. Their form for parents to submit is being prepared. Transportation is aware this is for 6
weeks, with the request to extend if weather allows in case of any cancellation during the
program.
