RE: CUP Application for Oldfield Ave Solar Garden
Dear Planning Commission
I was unable to attend the March 2nd public meeting as I was out of town. Since returning we have
attended meetings with neighborhood residents and representatives from the applicants of the CUP. I
have read several articles in local papers regarding Community Solar Gardens in our surrounding
communities.
I understand the need for Xcel to fulfill their commitment to alternative energy. But I do not believe
there is an argument that this is a commercial business. The applicant is selling their product. The
majority of the neighborhood surrounding this site has no interest in and will have no benefit from this
business or their product. The reps from Ameresco and Greemark Solar stated that their product could
increase investors electric bills. So this ”Community Solar Garden” will only benefit the out of town CUP
applicant while the surrounding residents will be negatively affected for the next 25-30 years.
The statement that it will not impact property values and scenic views is uneducated. This project will
affect everyone that drives or lives in the area of Oldfield Ave. Due to the elevation of the site there is
no way to substantially screen this site. I believe an 8ft security fence, security lighting and high voltage
signing on one of the most picturesque highest points in Washington County absolutely negatively
impacts scenic views and property values. This is a very rural part of Scandia that is not privy to city
sewer, water, natural gas, cable, reliable internet or cell phone service. We choose to reside here for the
natural beauty, rural feel and small town characteristics.
Therefore I respectfully ask you deny the request for this site on the findings that it will negatively
impact the scenic views.
