5.b PW Staff Report
Staff Report
Date of Meeting: 3/7/2022
For: Parks and Recreation Committee
From: Charles Fischer – Director of Public Works
Subject: Staff Report
Ice Rink:
The ice rink officially closed on Monday Feb 28th, 2022. The rink season this year as whole was a
success with only the need to close on few occasion due to extreme cold or continual evening
heavy snow. Public Works staff performed above and beyond expectation in daily preparation
of the ice surface and having availability to support weekend resurfacing. With the lack of
interest in the Zamboni operator position all maintenance was done by Full -Time staff with an
adjustment to past resurfacing schedules which included an evening resurfacing. This year
resurfacing was only completed in the morning and afternoon during normal work hours and
on the weekend before the opening of the warming house. Public Works did not receive any
complaints in ice condition due to the change in the resurfacing timeframes. Within one day of
closing the ice surface was not skateable due to the 40+ degree weather days leading up and
shortly after closing.
Playground:
Public Works has completed the draft of the DNR Grant and has submitted to the DNR for
corrective review before the final submission. Public Works will send the final version to any
member of the Committee interested in a copy and will field any questions or comments for
additions. The Grant Resolution will be completed in the March 15th Council meeting and
shortly after submitted to the DNR. The project was presented to the Scandia Marine Lions on
Thursday, March 3, 2022. There were many good questions which were answered by Terry or
myself with a good reaction to those who were present in the room. Online participation was
also available during the meeting. A notable question to discuss: “Has there been any other
requests for donations?”
