Re: Donation from Scandia Relief Association
Background:
The Scandia Firefighters Relief Association uses funds raised to benefit the members of the City of
Scandia fire department. The members of the association decided that the department was in need of
2 thermal cameras to replace the city purchased unit on engine 2 (no longer repairable) and to add a
unit to brush 1, since that truck is the first truck out to any structure fire. The thermal camera gives
the crews and incident commander the ability to see through smoke and walls to find the fire and aid
in the rapid extinguishment of the fire. In the past the association has donated ma ny items or funds to
improve the Scandia fire departments ability’s.
During the review of the city asset worksheet it was determined that the 2 cameras were never
presented to the council for approval of the donation. The units have been in use since May of 2021.
Issue:
Should the Council accept the donation of 2 thermal cameras from the firefighter’s relief
association?
Proposal Details:
Accept the donation from the relief association for 2 thermal cameras. Cameras are already
mounted in the trucks and in-service.
Fiscal Impact:
These units were purchase by the relief for the total amount of $13,509.98. They have a 10 year
useful life. Accepting the donation would put these items on the city CIP program for future
replacement when needed.
Options:
1) Accept the donation from the Relief Association.
2) Do not accept the donation.
Recommendation:
Option 1.
