6.c) Staff Report-PRC at MIBR3SCANDIA sta ft'Repart Date of Meeting: April 1, 2013 To: Park and Recreation Committee From: Kristina Handt, City Administrator Re: PRC at MIBR Agenda Item #: 6.c) Background: At the last couple meetings, the committee has been discussing the Minnesota Ironman Bicycle Ride coming through Scandia on Sunday, April 28th. At the March 19th City Council meeting, a special event permit was approved. It was suggested by one of their co -organizers that a table be set up in the community center during the event to promote the community. Issue: How should the PRC promote Scandia at the MIBR event? Proposal Details: Included in your packet is a double sided flyer highlighting Scandia's history and museums, the trail map for the central village area and a list of Scandia businesses. Also included in your packet is a copy of the trails brochure previously created by TKDA. Staff would suggest that the summer rec brochure and farmer's market flyers be made available at the PRC's table at the event. The PRC will need to determine who will volunteer to staff the sable, promote Scandia and answer questions. Riders are expected to be at the community enter oil Sunday, April 28"' from 8am to noon. The committee may have two two-hour shifts or one four shift. In addition to the PRC table, the following organizations may be invited to have a table to help promote Scandia: National Park Service, Gammelgarden, St. Croix River Association, Scandia- Marine Lions, Friends of Scandia Parks and Trails, William O'Brien State Park, Camp Lakamaga and the Scandia Farmers' Market. Options: Discuss and decide what handouts to provide at the table and who and when the table will be staffed. Fiscal Impact: We could print the flyers in house for about $0.08 per color copy per side. If we printed 1,000 of each of the three flyers it would cost approximately $350. This amount could be charged to the advertising budget. Recommendation: Print 1,000 copies of the three flyers. PRC members staff the table on Sunday, April 28t" from Sam to noon either in two shifts or for the entire four hours. SCANDIA HISTORYAND MUSEUMS Nestled among rolling hills and many beautiful lakes, the City of Scandia is the site of the first Swedish set- tlement in Minnesota. In October of 1850, the first log cabin was built on the shores of Hay Lake. Residents of Scandia have done little to alter the character of the community, and visitors will find reminders of mid - nineteenth century pioneer days and the rural town atmosphere. Swedish Settler's Monument: Scandia is the site of the first Swedish settlement in Minnesota. In 1850, the first log cabin was built on the shores of Hay Lake. A monument now stands near the site of this first log house, inscribed with the names of the first Swedish settlers. IN Gammelgirden Museum: "Gammelgirden" means Old Farm in Swedish. Here visitors can step back in history and experience the lives of early Swedish immigrants in the only open air museum devoted to Swedish immigration in the United States. Today, in buildings that have been carefully preserved and re- stored, visitors can get a glimpse of the daily lives of these im- migrants and participate in events and classes to learn more about the culture and times of the immigrants. Visit the many buildings on Gammelgirden Museum's 11 acres site. Your tour guide will give a lots of information about the Valkommen Hus, , Ladugird, . GammelKyrkan (1856), Immi- grant Hus (1855), Prast Hus (1868), barn (1879), stuga (1930), and WorkShed Gifts. The museum is open seasonally, May through October with regular weekend hours. Hay Lake School Museum: Hay Lake School Museum is located just two miles South of Scandia on County Road 3. Besides the Hay Lake School, there is a two-story log house with fur- nishings from this era. The Hay Lake School was constructed in 1896. Hay Lake School was used by Washington County Rural School system until 1963. The building then sat empty and boarded up until 1970 when a group of citizens, many of who graduated from the Hay Lake School, decided to clean the school and start giving tours of the building. The school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 1, 1970. In 1974 the Washington County Historical Society took over the school- house and in 1978 the Society purchased the school from the Forest Lake School District. Erickson Log House: The log house was constructed in 1868 by Johannes Erickson and his thirteen year old son Alfred. In 1904, Alfred constructed a nicer home and the old log home became at various time a granary, garage and playhouse. In 1974, the Washington County Historical Society purchased the old log house and moved it one and a half miles to its present site. The Erickson Log House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 17, 1976.
