5.b)2) Staff Report-MIBR Recap9CANDIA Staff Re,Po Date of Meeting: May 6, 2013 To: Park and Recreation Committee From: Kristina Handt, City Administrator Re: MIBR Recap Agenda Item #: 5.b)2) There were nearly 3,000 riders who came through the Scandia rest stop on the MN Ironman Bicycle Ride on Sunday, April 28, 2012. This is about 1,000 more than we had been planning for. The weather was in the 70s and the wind didn't really start to pick up until later in the day. Of the over 1,000 same day registrations (which was a record for the organization), about 90% of them came through Scandia. The Lions, PRC, Washington County Historical Society, Gammelgarden, St. Croix River Association, National Park Service and Friends of Scandia Parks and Trails all had information available at tables in the community center. The Lions, along with other volunteers, kept the food and beverages restocked. Councilmember Sally Swanson helped keep things clean and restocked supplies. We heard many positive comments from the riders, volunteers and organizers. A few things to consider changing next year is to (1) require more port -a -potties. There were long lines inside and outside for restroom facilities. (2) Change the flow of the food distribution table so riders begin at the south end and then can exit the north door without having to double back over the line. (3) Change the placement of/eliminate/cut down on vendor tables. Very few riders took any materials with them and many that did threw them away once outside. The committee should consider alternate ways to promote our community -videos, power point presentations, greeters, entertainment, etc. Also, consider putting posters up in the bathroom stalls and/or hallways or on table tops. (4)We could have used more volunteers to help keep the outside tables stocked, particularly when the lines were so long inside. (5) Volunteers wear comfortable shoes O Any other thoughts? THANK YOU to everyone who helped!
