Scandia Parks and Recreation Chair Report
5-14 Counsel work shop hosted the Watershed District.
Mike and I were there from PRC.
Anything we do that can improve water quality could enable us to get a grant from them the
Watershed District. If we can dig out the canary grass garden to become a filtering pond, we may
get some grant money for it. Rain gardens could also be eligible for a grant.
Currently, we are adding 50 tons of gravel per year on the street for the Log House Landing area.
PRC isn't going to do any action at this time. Someday we may be asked to do something so I am
adding this. 3 options were also brought up to reduce/eliminate erosion:
1. Pave the street and add settling ponds and other things along the way to slow the water flow and
filter the water. This would of course be the most expensive option.
2. Close the waterway to foot traffic only. Canoes and kayaks could be carried down. The road
would be for a private drive only. It would also eliminate the need for a dumpster. It was
mentioned that we could possibly get a deal with William Obrian for Scandia residents to use
one of their landings.
3. Close off the area completely. Apparently, to the DNR, it is just one more area to check for
properly cleaned boats to enter/exit the river. This would also make at least some of the local
residents happy and others very unhappy. But, after all it is a historic area.
According to a survey, most of the people using the boat landing are not from Scandia. Making it
open to Scandia residents only would be impossible to police.
May 21 City Council
Signage Guidelines
The City unanimously approved our signage guidelines. Sally wanted to see the font for signs in
the city proper to have the same font. This would not include Wind on the Pines and Hay Lake
Parks. It was decided to add that when we make an amendment with a recommendation on size of
the City Logo. There is apparently talk about changing the sign at the fire station to not say New
Scandia. We also talked about making future signs perpendicular to the road so they can be read
when driving up to the site instead of only when right in front of it. We should probably add that to
the amendment also.
Vacate land between Benson and Brumfeld
There was apparently a meeting with local residents discussing vacating the property.
The good news is the City decided not to take any action to vacate the land for various reasons.
The bad news is the City didn't seem to want the trail to go through the land. We'll deal with that
when we are ready to finish the trails.
Sand Lake Bike Ride
Sand Lake Bike Ride was approved. It still needs a County permit.
