7.a) Staff Report-VinterfestCANDIA
Slaff Reyorl
Date of Meeting: September 9, 2013
To: Park and Recreation Committee
From: Kristina Handt, City Administrator
Re: Vinterfest
Agenda Item #: Ta)
Background:
At the July and August meetings the committee began discussing new offerings for Vinterfest
2014. Please review the minutes of the meeting for additional background.
Issue:
What changes should be made to Vinterfest 2014?
Proposal Details:
Committee member Pam Arnold has suggested the following ideas for Vinterfest 2014:
X -Country Ski through the GammelGarden and Lilleskogen; QuizPromenade*, trail -side treats,
Swedish fashions for winter dressing (Designs of Sweden, the Swedish Institute Mpls, 45°
Stillwater), Quincy Hut making (it's not an igloo, it's a Quincy!), and X -Country Ski class (with
free skis and boots for those who want to give it a whirl)—Featuring: Stillwater Award Winning
Ski Coaches, Dennis Seefeldt and Bill Simpson; 45°, Stillwater's source for winter fashions; Ann
Bancroft, Polar Explorer and Winter Survivalist; Old Swedish Story Teller, Sven (Rich) Lund;
Designs of Sweden, Martin Halvqvist, Food by Scandia Cafe and Deli, St Croix Chocolate
Company and Melt (their new chocolate beverage bar). Registration: Sunday February 2nd, 2014
by 9 a.m. Late Comers welcome, if there are spots left. Capacity (TBD)
* QuizPromenade (Fragesport Promenade in Swedish) is a tradition in Sweden. Communities
gather at a meeting place, walk or ski together along a route designed by the Frdgesport Team
Leaders. Participants find notes in trees, on rocks ... along the route with questions, aka the QUIZ.
Questions are discussed and answered, with a prize at the end for those that have the most right
answers! An outdoor picnic follows!
A copy of last year's poster for Vinterfest is also included in your packet. Will all of these
activities happen again in 2014? If not, which ones?
Fiscal Impact:
The proposed 2014 budget include $75 for advertising for Vinterfest and $100 for misc. supplies.
The committee could reallocate these funds or would need to seek alternative funding for any
additional expenses.
Options:
1) Recommend approval of list of activities (specify activities) for Vinterfest 2014.
2) Recommend no changes to list of activities for Vinterfest 2014.
Recommendation:
The committee should identify any changes they would like to see for 2014 Vinterfest at this
meeting so that preparations can begin this fall. A recommendation on activities should be made
to the City Council for final approval.
