Draft Recommendations to Scandia City Council for Internet
Expansion Next Steps
To take advantage of the newly announced re-activation of Minnesota’s Broadband grant program as
well as remaining Washington County broadband grant money and to leverage local funding as
efficiently as possible the IAC recommends the following:
1. Pull forward the $100,000 in savings from the 2022 construction project (because of the grant
from Washington County) and apply to the 2023 project. This combined with $300,000
currently proposed for 2023 will provide $400,000 for Internet expansion funding from Scandia
in 2023.
2. Send a letter of intent to MidCo (as done in previous year’s) indicating Scandia’s desire to move
ahead with another expansion project in 2023 and ask MidCo to apply for grants from both the
Minnesota Broadband and Washington County grant programs to maximize Scandia’s
opportunity to gain additional funds to assist in the 2023 expansion.
3. Since the deadline to submit a grant to Minnesota’s program is August 4th, 2022 it is imperative
that the above actions occur as soon as possible to allow sufficient time for MidCo to develop a
construction plan for 2023 and apply for the grant.
