The Washington County K9 Unit has six handler/dog teamsassigned to the Patrol Division. To ensure 24/7 coverage, twoteams patrol during dayshift, two teams are assigned to afternoonshift, and two teams work on midnights.
The Washington County Sheriff’s
Office has officially welcomed two new
K9s to the department.
K9 “Red” and K9 “Goose” graduated
from the Saint Paul Police Canine
Academy on May 26th with their
handlers, Deputy Dave Peters and
Deputy Nate Thienes. They were
joined by Deputy Brandon Yetter
during the 12-week academy, who
was invited to lend his assistance as
as a guest trainer. Deputy Yetter is
currently working toward his USPCA
certification as an official trainer for the
Washington County K9 Unit.
At 1 ½ years old, K9 “Red” is a
Belgian Malinois who comes to us
from Florida and will partner with
handler Deputy Dave Peters. Peters, a
sheriff’s office deputy since 2018, joins
the K9 unit on midnight patrol after
previously serving as the Scandia
contract deputy. He holds additional
assignments as a SWAT Crisis
Negotiator and community outreach
team member.
K9 “Goose” is a 2 ½ year old Belgian Malinois who traveled to us all the way from the
Netherlands. “Goose” will join five-year deputy and SWAT tactical team member Nate Thienes
on midnight patrol. When he’s not working, “Goose” enjoys laid-back life at home with Deputy
Thienes’ domestic dog, “Maverick”.

Washington County and are trained
in human tracking, evidence
recovery, building searches, area
searches, obedience, agility,
apprehensions, high risk vehicle
stops, and narcotics detection. The
dogs are certified annually through
the United States Police K9
association and meet monthly as a
unit for a full-day of training.
Handlers are continually training
with their dogs on both their work
days and days off, developing an
incredible bond with their canine
partners.

OFFICE SUPPORT
Increased efforts to keep Washington
County's waterways safe from boaters
under the influence of drugs and
alcohol are on tap, with deputies from
the Washington County Sheriff's Office
and other public safety personnel
planning extra patrols July 2-4.
Katie is working towards one year
at the sheriff's office and is the
friendly face to greet you behind
our front desk!
She is a Wisconsinite who grew up
in Somerset with an Associate's
Degree in Business and Criminal
Justice. Katie currently staffs the
window in the records unit,
assisting in gun permits, predatory
offender registration, data requests,
walk-in reports, and any other
inquiry from the general public.
Prior to joining Washington County,
Katie managed a convenience
store for 15 years!
When Katie is not at work, you can
usually find her at a sporting event
cheering on or helping coach her
11-year-old son in hockey, soccer,
or baseball. She also enjoys hiking,
traveling, and spending time with
her two dogs and rabbit. So far, her
favorite place she's traveled to is
Alaska!
Deputy Stafne had the honor of escortingthis 7-year-old to school in his squad car asthe recipient of a community auction prize!
The 8-week Washington County Citizens Academy classof 11 community members celebrated their successfulcompletion of the program on May 24th.
The extra attention is part of Operation Dry Water, a nationwide campaign to highlight the
dangers of boating under the influence of drugs and alcohol and call attention to the heavy
penalties associated with boating while intoxicated (BWI). Operation Dry Water coincides
with the Fourth of July holiday weekend, when waterways are particularly busy and BWI-
related injuries and deaths tend to spike. In 2021, law enforcement officers contacted
328,627 boaters and made 638 BUI arrests over the course of the three-day weekend.
Alcohol use continues to be the leading contributing factor in recreational boating
fatalities. Alcohol consumption while boating is not only dangerous for the operator of
the vessel, but also for passengers. Impairment can lead to slips, falls overboard,
injuries and deaths that could have been prevented. In 2020, nine of the 16 boating
fatalities – more than 56 percent – in Minnesota involved alcohol, an increase from the
six-year average of 44 percent.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office encourages the public to have a fun, safe
boating season through responsible boating practices: stay sober while boating, always
wear a life jacket, and take a boater safety course before hitting the water. For more
information visit operationdrywater.org.
New deputies welcomed to the Sheriff's Office
Washington County added four new deputies to our ranks during the month of May! Deputy
Colin McNeely, Deputy Arturo Lopez, Deputy Jacob Monsma, and Deputy Michael
Pommerer joined the patrol division and are currently in the process of completing the field
training program before they hit the streets on solo patrol.
