Katie is working towards one year at the sheriff's office and is the friendly face to greet you behind our front desk! She is a Wisconsinite who grew up in Somerset with an Associate's Degree in Business and Criminal Justice. Katie currently staffs the window in the records unit, assisting in gun permits, predatory offender registration, data requests, walk-in reports, and any other inquiry from the general public. Prior to joining Washington County, Katie managed a convenience store for 15 years! When Katie is not at work, you can usually find her at a sporting event cheering on or helping coach her 11-year-old son in hockey, soccer, or baseball. She also enjoys hiking, traveling, and spending time with her two dogs and rabbit. So far, her favorite place she's traveled to is Alaska! Deputy Stafne had the honor of escortingthis 7-year-old to school in his squad car asthe recipient of a community auction prize! The 8-week Washington County Citizens Academy classof 11 community members celebrated their successfulcompletion of the program on May 24th. The extra attention is part of Operation Dry Water, a nationwide campaign to highlight the dangers of boating under the influence of drugs and alcohol and call attention to the heavy penalties associated with boating while intoxicated (BWI). Operation Dry Water coincides with the Fourth of July holiday weekend, when waterways are particularly busy and BWI- related injuries and deaths tend to spike. In 2021, law enforcement officers contacted 328,627 boaters and made 638 BUI arrests over the course of the three-day weekend. Alcohol use continues to be the leading contributing factor in recreational boating fatalities. Alcohol consumption while boating is not only dangerous for the operator of the vessel, but also for passengers. Impairment can lead to slips, falls overboard, injuries and deaths that could have been prevented. In 2020, nine of the 16 boating fatalities – more than 56 percent – in Minnesota involved alcohol, an increase from the six-year average of 44 percent. The Washington County Sheriff's Office encourages the public to have a fun, safe boating season through responsible boating practices: stay sober while boating, always wear a life jacket, and take a boater safety course before hitting the water. Deputy Colin McNeely, Deputy Arturo Lopez, Deputy Jacob Monsma, and Deputy Michael Pommerer joined the patrol division and are currently in the process of completing the field training program before they hit the streets on solo patrol.
