SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

WELCOME
Hall of fame Wayne Erickson. Scandia has had only one
Minnesota State Hall of Famer, that was Wayne Erickson.
He was inducted in 1984. He started playing ball for Scandia
when he was 16. He pitched for Scandia for 20 years. In the
1960's he played in many different leagues sometimes five
nights a week. Wayne took Scandia to 4 State
championships 1963, 1966, 1967, 1968. In his lifetime
Wayne had 59 NO hitters, 12 perfect games, 18 strikeouts in
one game. Also pitched 56 innings in 2 days and was the
state tournament MVP in 1963. Wayne passed away on
April 4th, 1992 of Wagners Disease. Some of his teammates
for those years Phil Anderson, Marlin Thompson, Dean
Carlson, Don Barnholdt, Joe Junker, Denny Lofboom, Mark
Hagstrom, Jim Turner, Choc Junker, Jerry Ryan, Don Sequin
Manager, George Lindgren fund raiser and Hiliding Nelson
scorekeeper. Wayne was an inspiration to us all.....
How It all Began back in 1946
Scandia played it's first softball games in 1946. The team was formed by Les Benson and Stan Sandquist. Other members
on the team were Jim Croone, Lowell Isaacson, Jim Berglund, Phil Anderson, L. Johnson, Bob Bruss, and Leroy Carlson. This team
played in the Chisago Lakes League and all the games were played at Chisago City.
The present ball park was built in 1948, when the land was leased from Lou Vain Holcomb. Scandia won most of the
league championships in the Chisago Lakes League. Later on Scandia picked up two new ballplayers in Roger Hagstrom and Lyle
Martinson. Many old timers in the area claim that Roger Hagstrom was the best centerfielder the league ever had.
Les "Lefty" Benson for many years was the main stay on the mound for Scandia as was Wayne Erickson also ............
It all started in 1946 when Lester Benson organized the first team. They played the first 2 years in Chisago City. The
present ball park was built in 1948. The land was leased from Louvain Holcomb. From 1947 to 1949 stock was sold to put up a
fence and lights. The land was bought in 1964. They had smokers and other fund raisers to pay taxes and light bills. Around 1990
the Scandia Athletic Association could not afford to keep paying taxes and upkeep of the field. So it was sold to the town of
Scandia, who now owns the field. The Lions Club also helps with the upkeep of the field and some of the softball bills.

Team was formed by Paul Kendrick in a time when fastpitch in Scandia had enough players to field three full teams. This
team was an expansion team with a mix of experienced players and new younger players that would help feed the A and B teams
and continue Scandia's rich fastpitch tradition.
Class C state tournament champions, beating Da Boys of Geneva twice in order to capture the title. Da Boys was a young
team that had won a couple class A tournaments in the same season. In the first game against Da Boys Kendrick struck out 12,
key hitting in the 7" inning by Lindberg, Miller and Buck for 3 RBI's and won 4-3. In the Championship game multi -extra base hits
by Brown and Schuldt and home runs by Buck, Kendrick and McDonough gave Scandia a 9-6 win for the title.

Men's Fastpitch in the 90"s
Throughout the mid and late 1990's, the Scandia.Men's Fastp itch Team would field many respectable teams year after
year. Under the leadership of player/coach, Scott Berglund, the Scandia nine would make the annual trip to the state
tournament. While the teams played respectably, they didn't seem to get all the way to the championship. Local leaders on the
team included, Paul Kendrick and Rick Smith. Local players included the likes of Steve Brown, Mike Benson, Adam Wojtowicz, Dan
Nordin, Richard Quigley and Doniver Ahlm.
In 1999, they finally seemed to pull it all together. Even though regular coach Scott Berglund was on hiatus, his
younger brother, pitcher/coach Jeff Berglund, filled in admirably. Coaching duties were rounded out by veteran fastballer Mike
Krick, who also filled in at third base. Local regulars included infielders Joel Nelson, and Dana Wojtowicz, with outfielders Neil
Swenson, Andy McCurdy, and Ryan Benson catching fly balls and throwing out base runners. Pitching duties were shared by Chris
Isaacson, with catcher Dale Schuldt handling duties behind the plate. A contingency of four lads from the Stillwater area were
also major contributors to the team, with infielders Dan Eichten, Chris Diethert, Mike Asmus, as well as outfielder Chad Rogness.
Designated hitter Dan Lindgren rounded out the squad that went 25-0 to finish the season which included a State Tournament
Championship. The season concluded with a trip to the National Tournament in Sacramento, CA, where the team went 3-2 and
tied for 17`" place in the Nation.

Men's Fastpitch in the 80"s
In the 1980's and 1990's, Scandia Fastpitch saw resurgence from its earlier days of great success. It had been 16 long
years since this fastpitch community last had a state championship fastpitch team. In the 1987 State Fastpitch Championships,
Scandia marched, with an undefeated 5-0 record, through a tough state tournament field in South St. Paul. In the state
championship game, Scandia defeated Lake Lillian 6-0 to bring a state title back to this small town for the 1't time since 1971.
Scandia took its state title and a 54-26 record into the National Tournament in Redding, CA.
Scandia Fastpitch thrived behind hitting, pitching and defense of local players such as Dan Lindgren, Joel Nelson, Rick
Smith, Richard Quigley, Greg Isaacson, Mitch Thompson, David Miller, and Brian McLaughlin. Players from just outside of the
Scandia area included infielders Greg Schell, Courtney Clafin, and Jim Leisz. Pitching and catching combination Keith Schmidt and
Jeff Chelberg, as well as outfielder Larry Chelberg. And not to forget Garen Enquist, the team's reliable scorekeeper.
Scandia continued its winning tradition in 1988 as it won the Northern Regionals with a 5-2 victory over Stewart Taylor of
Duluth. Scandia again advances to the National Tournament and finished the tournament with a 3-2 record and a 17`h place
finish. Ironically, the same Stewart Taylor team that Scandia defeated in the Northern Regionals ended up winning the National
Tournament. This Scandia team had been just one of 11 teams in the country that had now qualified for the last two National
Tournaments. Scandia went on to appear in 7 consecutive National Tournaments.

It Was A Long Day!!!
The day was August 291h, 1976. 1 did not remember the exact day so I called Wendy Anderson (Jimmy's wife) because it was
the weekend Wendy and Jimmy got married. Jimmy's brother David missed the game because of the wedding. Hardy did not know at
the time that he was going to miss the longest game in Scandia Fastpitch history. We knew that Hardy was going to miss the regional
tournament in Duluth when we took 2nd in the AA State Tournament. He was our starting shortstop. Do we draft a shortstop or do we
draft a catcher and have me go back to short for the weekend? Boy, am I glad we drafted a catcher!
In the tournament, we had lost to Byerly's (1-0), best Gallagers (7-3) and put Duluth out of the tournament (5-2). We stepped
on the field to play Mankato at 12:30 (Loser goes home). We batted first and you just can't believe how fast Mankato's pitcher (W altin)
looked. Was it because we were playing in Wade Stadium (Duluth's Baseball Stadium), was the pitching mound set too close, or had we
drank too many pops the night before? Anyway, WOW was he quick. Scott Berglund was our first batter and he walked on 5 pitches.
Since I used the same bat as Scott, I took the bat from Scott and asked, "Scotty, what is throwing?" Scott replied, "I don't know, I never
saw a pitch!" The next two batters to get on after Scott (with most batters striking out in between) was Jimmy Carlson. Both times
Jimmy got on, he was attempting to bunt and got hit in the (?) both time. Way to take it for the team.
In the top of the fourteenth inning, I singled (close your eyes and swing), got to 2"d on a bunt, and scored on a single by Jim
Lindberg. We would have normally thought we would now win, but Mankato was always getting people on base and Jim Lindberg
would always seem to get out of it with the help of his defense. We had 8 double plays in the game and they were not the normal type.
Our outfield kept throwing out runners. Mankato scored in the bottom of the fourteenth and the game went on. In the bottom of the
twenty-fifth, Mankato scored to end the game. Or first baseman, Jerry Smith, did say that we did have the guy out at first so the game
would have gone longer.
Jim Lindberg struck out 7 batters and threw all twenty-five innings. Waltin threw the first 14 innings and Dale Root threw the
last 11 innings and they struck out 33 Scandia batters. I am not going to say and names but I know that one of our players struck out 7
times. Both teams walked off the field at 6:30 to a standing ovation. Because the game lasted 6 hours, the whole tournament was
backed up so bad that the final game in the tournament did not get over until 2:30 A.M. There are more stories about the game and
feel free to talk to any of the players who played in the game but naturally don't talk to Hardy!!
