06.28.2022 Minutes TC Scandia Tourism Committee Minutes June 28, 2022 – 5:00 p.m. Meeting at Community Center, Zoom and Boxcast.com Members in Attendance: Sue Dickens, Lynne Moratzka, Sarah Porubcansky, and Mayor Christine Maefsky. Absent: Lisa Schlingerman. Staff in attendance: Brenda “Bee” Stignani (Office Assistant). Call to Order –Chair Dickens called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m., a quorum is present. Approve the Agenda – Dickens moved, Porubcansky seconded, to approve the agenda with Flexibility. Motion carried unanimously. Approve the Minutes – Porubcansky moved, Moratzka seconded, to approve the May 24, 2022 minutes. Motion carried unanimously. Wayfinding Signs Update – Dickens summarized the next steps and clarified that this project will move forward with hired consultants. Dickens will present to Council the request for funding to be included in 2023 budget proposal. City Wide Garage Sale – Feedback – Stignani provided a written report. Moratzka reported approximately 50 shoppers at the Community Center sales, with no challenges for dumping sale leftovers. Moratzka reported feedback from participants onsite reflected those in the survey. Dickens facilitated further discussion concluding with suggested improvements to organizing a 2023 sale to reach out further to bring visitors to Scandia including opening registration in February or March for a sale with a digital map in May. Consensus to keep participation free if Council will support purchasing generic signs with the City’s logo and arrows to place on main roadways directing traffic towards homes participating in the sale. Shrpa – Porubcansky reported there will be a 2022 partnership opportunity with Explore Minnesota. Dickens ask Shrpa to if a renewed agreement entitles Scandia additional adventures being published by their professionals and ask for the date expected with the new rates. Suggested new adventures: • Barn Quilt Trail – Dickens will make contact • Historical Tour – Porubcansky will make contact • Dala Horses of Scandia Tour – Moratzka will prepare and submit to Dickens or Porubcansky for publishing • Cycling Scandia – Dickens will make contact Dickens asked for clarification between responsibilities for organizing city-wide events between Tourism Committee, EDA and PRC, in particular, Best of Scandia Shopping Extravaganza since the organizers no longer are members of the EDA. Stignani offered an explanation that individual Scandia Tourism Committee Minutes June 28, 2022 2 | P a g e volunteers “champion” the different city-wide events while the committees facilitate communication, and therefore endorsement, with Council. General direction for the Tourism Committee can be found in the U of Mn Tourism Study. Dickens will contact the other Best of Scandia organizers to see which committee they will work through. Adjournment –Motion by Porubcansky, seconded by Moratzka, to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried unanimously.
