5.d) Staff Report-Maintenance Superintendent Salary Adjustment SCANDIA Staff Renort Date of Meeting: January 8, 2013 To: City Council From: Kristina Handt, City Administrator Re: Maintenance superintendent Salary Adjustment Agenda Item#: S.d) Background: Tim Kieffer began working for the City of Scandia as Maintenance Superintendent on Monday, May 14, 2012. The offer letter to Kieffer stated"Your starting salary will be $60,500 per year. At the end of the required 6-month probationary period, and annually thereafter subject to satisfactory performance reviews, the City Council may consider an increase in the salary amount(in addition to any general or cost-of-living adjustments that may be granted to city employees.)"The position was advertised with a salary range of$55,000-$70,000. On December 20, 2012,the City Administrator and Maintenance Superintendent discussed his work performance and established goals for 2013. No issues of concern were raised during the review. Issue: How should the salary of the ma'intenance superintendent be adjusted following a satisfactory 6 month probationary review? Proposal Details: I am recommending Kieffer receive a 5%increase retroactive to the first pay check in December (which covers the last two weeks in November). This would result in an annual salary of $63,525 through the end of 2012. Since most employees also received a 2%cost of living adjustment effective January 1, that would bring Kieffer's annual salary to $64,795.50 for 2013. Fiscal Impact: The 5%increase would result in$401.06 in additional public works wages, taxes and benefits for 2012 and $3,545.24 in public works wages, taxes and benefits for 2013. Options: 1) Direct staffs to place approval of 5% increase to Kieffer salary effective retroactively to first paycheck in December 2012 on the next consent agenda. 2) Direct staffs to place approval of a different percent increase to Kieffer salary effective retroactively to first paycheck in December 2012 on the next consent agenda. 3) Direct staffs to place approval of some other salary adjustment for Kieffer on the next consent agenda. 4) Do not approve a salary adjustment for Kieffer. Recommendation: Option 1.
