5.e) Staff Report-Committee/Commission Appointments and Other Council Appointments � � � � �.+ �\ --�``'J`� �l SCANDIA Staff Report Date of Meeting: January 8, 2013 To: City Council From: Kristina Handt, City Administrator Re: Committee/Commission Appointments and other Council Appointments Agenda Item#: S.e) Background: It is typical for the Council to review committee and commission appoinhnents at the first meeting of the new year. Some appointments the Council should discuss are suggested below. Issue: Who should be appointed to any vacancies? Does the Council want to change of the liaisons to committees/commission? Proposal Details: Dan Lee was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Committee in February 2011 for a term ending Feb. 1, 2015. Ordinance 125 states "The Park and Recreation Advisory Committee consists of seven members appointed by the Council for staggered terms of five years, expiring on January 31 st of each year." The Council should consider if they want to fill the vacancy created on the Parks and Recreation Committee due to Lee's election to the City Council or if they want to change the number of inembers on the committee. Tom Krinke was appointed to the Planning Commission February 19, 2008 and his term expires February 1, 2013. Tom has indicated he is not interested in serving another term. The Council should decide how it wants to go about filling that vacancy. In the past,the City has advertised the vacancies and accepted applications then held interviews with the Council and candidates. Should this process be followed again? James (Moose) Malmquist has been unable to attend the last couple Wastewater Advisory Committee meetings and has moved to Parmly in Chisago City. The Council should decide how to fill this vacancy. Should staff advertise for applications for this vacancy and plan on Council interviews? Council Liaisons: Currently, Councilmember Sally Swanson serves as the liaison to the Park and Recreation Committee. Does the Council want to change that appointment? Councilmember Chris Ness serves as the liaison to the Planning Commission. Does the Council want to change that appointment? Mayor Simonson was appointed to serve on the Forest Lake Cable Commission in January 2011. Does the Council want to change this appointment? Recommendation: Provide direction to staff regarding reappointments and process for new appointments.
