Sammy Van Beek, 3rd Grade
One wintery afternoon, Helvi the tomte was lying around in her straw bed,
tucked away in the horse barn of a ranch in Scandia, Minnesota. Helvi was the
great-granddaughter of Halvar the tomte who had escaped from the mean, nasty,
and ugly trolls in the 1870s. On this afternoon, Helvi was feeling a little bored. It
was too cold for a little tomte to go outside, and she couldn’t talk with the horses
because they were pulling a sleigh for Lizzy, the daughter of the ranch owners.
Helvi decided to go up to the house and see if there was any leftover
Christmas rice pudding available. She loved it more than her great-grandfather
did. When she got to the house, she found one last helping of pudding on the
porch. After finishing her favorite snack, she heard some music coming from
inside the house. She wanted to find out where it was coming from and went
inside the house. Following the sound, she went upstairs to Violet’s bedroom.
Violet was playing a game on the computer.
Helvi wanted to take a look, but she knew that people weren’t supposed to
see tomtes. She snuck in, and dashed under the bed. Violet was so focused on her
game, she didn’t even hear Helvi bang her head against the bedrail. Violet was
playing a game called Prodigy. After a while, Lizzy came back from her sleigh ride
and Violet went downstairs to talk to her. Helvi saw her chance and went over to
the computer. She decided to find a pie recipe so she could bake a pie for Violet
and Lizzy since they made rice pudding for her every Christmas. She found a
perfect apple pie recipe with a lattice crust. She wrote down the recipe and snuck
down the stairs and out to her barn to bake.
That night, Helvi baked the best pie she had ever baked. She brought it over
to the house and set it on the table on the porch, right where Lizzy and Violet
always left the rice pudding. The next morning, the girls found the pie on the
porch when they were going out for their morning sleigh ride. They brought it
inside and wondered who made it for them. It smelled and looked SO good that
their parents said they all should have a piece, even though it was just after
breakfast. Who knew that with a little help from the internet, a young little Tomte
could make the best pie ever.
