Re: Advertising for Seasonal Maintenance Worker for Public Works
Agenda Item#: 9 j)
Background:
In 2012, the Part-Time Temporary Seasonal Maintenance Worker(Public Works/Summer)
position was created. The position assists with a wide variety of tasks involved in the
maintenance and operation of city facilities and infrastructure including road maintenance,
grounds and building maintenance, meter reading etc.
During almost half the summer season, one of the full-time workers is mowing roadsides, while
the other is working on shoulders, road signs, patching and other tasks. Many tasks can be
performed more efficiently with another set of hands available. Even when both staff members
are working together, a third person would make certain tasks more safe and efficient. For
example, road patching goes much faster if two people are patching and a third is driving the
truck. '
There are many tasks that this position could help with to free up our skilled workers (such as
cleaning jobs or running for parts.). This will allow full time staff to continue to focus on road
maintenance, which is the top priority during the summer season.
Issue:
Should the Council approve advertising for a Seasonal Maintenance Worker for the Public
Works Dept?
Proposal Details:
Similar to last year, staff is requesting the Council authorize staff(City Administrator and
Maintenance Superintendent) to advertise and interview the applicants for the position with a
recommendation on hiring coming to the Council in May.
The tentative timeline would be as follows:
Posd advertise on web site: Apri18
Advertise in local papers: April 10
Applications close: Friday, April 26 (4:00 p.m.)
Interviews: Week of Apri129
Council Approval: May 21
Start date: May 28 (approximate)
Fiscal Impact:
The 2013 pay rate for the position was set at $10.20 to $12.25 per hour. The budget is sufficient
to cover about 14 work weeks at an average of 3 days per week. The work schedule would vary
based upon the jobs to be performed, and somewhat upon the weather.
Options:
1) Approve having staff advertise and interview for the Part-Time Seasonal Maintenance
Worker position.
2) Approve having the Council complete the interviews
3) Do not approve the advertising for the Part-Time Seasonal Maintenance Worker position.
Recommendation:
Option 1.
