5.b PW Report Staff Report Date of Meeting: 1/05/2023 For: PRC From: Charles Fischer – Director of Public Works Subject: Staff Report Rink Preparations: Public Works staff were busy last month clearing roads of snow and ice, but had time to continue snow removal in the rinks allowing frost to drive into the ground prior to ice establishment. Two opportunities, taking advantage of the cold temps, prior to December 23, Public Works staff initiated base flooding of the ice rinks. By the afternoon of December 22nd, 2+ inches of rough base ice were established. Due to the Holiday and extreme windchills ice establishment resumed December 27th. By noon on the 27th, the warming house and rinks opened to the public. Warm temps prior to this meeting have played a major factor in continued ice maintenance. Hopefully moving forward normal January temps will provide more opportunity to build ice prior to the Vinterfest tournament. Rink Staffing: The new Public Works Rink Maintenance employee started the week of December 19th and has had a slow transition into normal rink maintenance due to weather conditions. Moving forward Public Works will rely on this person to continue ice maintenance for the rest of the season. Volunteering: Interested persons that would like to volunteer time for rink maintenance are still welcome and an appropriate time for training will be administered by Public Works. Vinterfest: Public Works and office staff are working on a new banner color scheme for the large banners which are placed at the major intersections in the City. These new banners will be made with wind slits in an effort to increase the lifespan of the banners.
