7.b Late Addition: Art in Action_ Scandia 2022, MN ReportArt in Action: Scandia, MN Report 1 Location:Scandia City Hall & Community Center Date(s):July 18th - July 22nd 2022 Time:8:30am-12:00pm daily Overview of Programming:Art In Action means empowering kids to take ownership of the creative process and put it into action! The program has two main goals: First, we want our campers to think of art as a verb. It’s something you do, not something you make. A process, not a product. When you focus on art as an action, then mistakes are less scary. And it's only through making mistakes that we can learn. We believe that practicing this mindset makes for better creative thinkers and better people! Second, we want our campers to feel like they don't have to wait around to be cast in a play. They can write, produce, and star in their own show. They can be an actor, director, producer, designer - an entrepreneur! Number of Campers:12 Overview of Camp:We were so lucky to have 12 super engaged and excited kids who worked hard all week to put together one original play and one original dance. Campers wrote an original play entitled The Rise of Grimey Sue through a game called storyball, in which they passed an object around the circle and each added a sentence to the story as they held the object. Typically story ball happens one word at a time, but our group was so creative and ready to work together that they quickly moved from adding one word each, to adding full sentences and phrases, which quickly fleshed out funny and original details in our story. Their play was about a girl named Grimey Sue and her best friend, a robot dog named Hot Dog. The two loved to throw disco parties in Grimey Sue’s disco-cave. One night, during a disco-party, where Grimey Sue served her world-famous spicy stew, an evil dragon named Stu, busted in and ruined the party and ate all the stew. In the commotion, Hot Dog explodes. Sue must then go on a mission to rebuild her best friend and save the day. This play was hilarious and truly creative. Led by Festival teaching artists, Lily Gast and Mitchell Greene, the group performed their play for a large group of family and friends on the final day of camp. In addition to their original play, campers also performed an original dance to the song “Comedy Tonight” from Sondheim's classic musical,A Funny Thing Happened on the Art in Action: Scandia, MN Report 2 Way to the Forum. Camp Director, Megan Hanks, choreographed a 3 minute dance that included a variety of essential dance moves that are basics and staples to the world of theater. These are moves and formations that the campers can take with them for the rest of their lives! Some of these moves include the jazz square, jazz hands, grapevines, three point turns, windows, heel-toe-heels, and more! Campers performed their dance before their play, and all the audience was thrilled and proud to see how much work they had memorized and accomplished in such a short time.
