09.d PW - Staff Report Staff Report Date of Meeting: 1/17/2022 For: Honorable Mayor and Council From: Charles Fischer – Director of Public Works Subject: PW - Staff Report Roads/ROW Public Works has had another busy month plowing City streets. Snow events so far this year have had a lingering characteristic of off and on snow over multiple days. An unofficial snow total measured by Public Works from the last three snow events totals 38 inches. Between snow events and as of recent staff have been pushing back snow banks along roads, intersections, and parking lots to create more room for clearing snow the remainder of the season. Public Works has also discussed with the County the need for clearing snow banks along the County roads in th e Village Center. Due to the continuing snow events, this task by the County has not been able to be completed and may not be done to one to two weeks following guardrail and bridge deck clearing on County roads. Parks The hockey and pleasure rink officially opened December 27th. Since that date the rink has gone through on and off closure due to snow and warm weather events. Staff continues to be dedicated to providing a quality ice surface when temperatures are adequate or optimal for resurfacing and flooding. Sewer Sewer systems continue to be running well with no major issues in the last month. There is a check valve and valve actuator scheduled to be repaired in the A/E system in the coming weeks. The repair should not affect service to the properties connected to the system as each repair should be isolated or in the event the repair cannot be isolated a pump truck will be on site to manage flows into the main lift station. Equipment: Last month Public Works reported the issues our oldest plow truck, 203-11, had been experiencing and all repairs have been addressed with little to no dow n time during snow events. Public Works has been able to keep the truck operation, but is reaching a stage where repairs will become more often and expensive to maintain. Fortunately, this truck is scheduled for replacement in 2023 and will be kept operation and safe to operate until the new replacement arrives. Council Chamber Update: In the last month much has happened in the Council Chambers in regards to updating the room. Items completed so far: • Wallpaper removal • Painting • AV upgrades to connect with newer system installed in the hall • Picture and wall décor updated • Providing useable work space for Interim City Administrator – between project items being completed • Carpeting • Wall paneling on south wall - work completed by Public Works • New blinds – work completed by Public Works • Installation of furnishings – work completed by Public Works • Final Cleaning – work completed by Public Works Street Lights/Snow Flakes: The section of street lights south of Oakhill on Olinda has been out for some time. Public Works is working with a contractor to repair the electrical issue . After initial inspection Public Works will need to clear the snow from the base of each pole for further inspection of the wiring. Public Works was hoping for an earlier time frame of the County clearing snow through the Village Center and a cooperative effort could have been made. With a break in snow clearing from roadways Public Work will proceed clearing snow from the pole bases.
