6. Discuss Dolores Peterson Recognition Date: February 1, 2023 To: City Council From: Christine Maefsky, Mayor Re: Dolores Peterson Recognition For 32 years beginning in 1974 Dolores Peterson served as the New Scandia Township clerk where she oversaw the budget (which grew during her time from $150,000 to over $2,000,000), organized elections, and kept the Township’s official records. She managed significant projects, including the bidding and contract signing for paving the township’s gravel roads and the 1985 construction of the Community Center. Dolores led the city through the terms of three town board chairs. In 2006 she was elected to the first Scandia City Council where she served her final four years in city government. Dolores has been described by town officials and citizens as “an icon”, “an institution”, “forceful”, “fearless”, “the public face of township government”. At the January 21st City Council meeting we will be presenting Dolores posthumously (she died in 2019) with a Scandia Good Neighbor Award. At that time, I will be recommending that we hang Dolores’ picture in the Heritage Room as a way of further honoring her. I wanted the council to be aware of this now so we can have any necessary discussion before that night. Thank you.
