Tennis/Pickleball Update:
Public Works has been working with Bolton & Menk engineers to develop the best options for updating the
tennis and pickleball facilities. After hearing many suggested options for either our courts on the City Hall
campus or Barton Johnson we feel the two options provided in this report help maximize the existing and
usable space at both locations or possibly only one location.
Figure 1, includes updating only the city court with an expansion of playable surface. The expansion would
allow for a tennis only court and six dedicated pickleball courts. ($397,000)
Figure 2, includes updating two locations; the existing City courts and the Barton Johnson court. The City
courts would be transitioned to six pickleball courts and the Barton Johnson court would become a tennis only
court. ($381,000)
The estimates are very close whether one or two sites are improved. The additional cost for an expansion of
the city courts is the requirement for a BMP (Stormwater Best Management Practice). This requirement is due
to the addition of impermeable surface and proximity of wetlands in the area. If both sites are chosen to be
improved than no BMP is required because there will be no additional or marginal addition of impermeable
surface.
Lighting estimates were a late request for addition to the estimates and should be received soon. An option
we are exploring is the use of solar LED fixtures which will not require installation of wires and control panels.
The costs may be close to a traditional wired system initially but will have a continuous return on energy
savings until replacement is required.
Our goal is to present these two options to the PRC for review and comments before moving forward with
detailed design specification for construction through City Council approval.
